Captain Zara's gauges
Hi friend! Captain Zara's rocket has fuel gauges. One says 1/2 full. Another says 2/4 full. Robo the robot is confused. Different numbers, but the same fuel? Let's find out!
Same amount of fuel
Look at three gauges. The first shows 1/2. The second shows 2/4. The third shows 4/8. All three fill the same amount! Fractions that name the same amount are equivalent.
Which equals 1/3?
Which fraction equals 1/3: 2/6, 1/6 or 3/4? Picture a 1/3 gauge. Cut each third into 2 pieces. Now there are 6 pieces, and 2 are filled. So 1/3 = 2/6! Watch out: 1/6 is a smaller piece, not the same.
