1. Captain Zara's rocket

   Hello, space explorer! Captain Zara's rocket is at mile 249. Space stations float at every hundred: 200, 300, 400. Her fuel is low! Which station is closer, 200 or 300?

2. How far to each station?

   Here is space from 200 to 300. The halfway star is 250. Zara's rocket is at 249. Back to 200 is 49 miles. On to 300 is 51 miles. 49 is less, so 200 is closer!

3. Let's check 672

   Is 672 closer to 600 or 700? The halfway star between them is 650. Look at the tens digit: 7. That's 5 or more, so 672 is past the star. It's closer to 700!
