Coordinate Plane: First Quadrant
How the lesson starts: Coordinate Plane: First Quadrant

Captain Coral's map
Ahoy, matey! Captain Coral found an old treasure map. It says the gem is buried at (4, 3). But which way is 4, and which way is 3? Let's crack the secret code of the coordinate plane!
Across, then up
The line going across is the x-axis. The line going up is the y-axis. They meet at (0, 0): the origin. To find (4, 3), start at the origin, walk 4 steps across, then climb 3 steps up. There's the gem!
Kiwi's flight
Kiwi the parrot starts at the origin. She flies 2 units right, then 5 units up. Right is the x number, so x = 2. Up is the y number, so y = 5. She lands at (2, 5). Watch out: (5, 2) is a different spot!
