Grade 5 Math · Level 3, Decimals in the Real World

Divide Decimals

How the lesson starts: Divide Decimals

  1. Star Station supplies

Hello, space cadet! Commander Juno is on the Star Station with 4 astronauts. She has 8.4 liters of water to share equally. How much does each astronaut get? Time to divide decimals!

  2. Four equal hops

    Split 8.4 into 4 equal hops. Each hop is 2.1. Hop, hop, hop, hop, and we land on 8.4! Share the ones: 8 ÷ 4 = 2. Then the tenths: 0.4 ÷ 4 = 0.1. So 8.4 ÷ 4 = 2.1 liters each.

  3. How many cups?

    Juno has 3.6 liters of juice, and each cup holds 0.6 liters. How many cups? Think in tenths: 3.6 is 36 tenths, and 0.6 is 6 tenths. 36 ÷ 6 = 6. So 3.6 ÷ 0.6 = 6 cups! Watch out: it's not 0.6.
