Grade 5 Math · Level 3, Decimals in the Real World

Multiply Decimals

How the lesson starts: Multiply Decimals

  1. Nina's garden

Hello, gardener! Nina has a garden with 4 rows of carrots. Each row gives 3.6 kg. How many kilograms is that in all? We need to multiply a decimal. Let's dig in!

  2. Four equal jumps

Times 4 means 4 equal jumps. Jump 3.6, again, again, and again! We land on 14.4. Shortcut: 36 × 4 = 144. 3.6 has one decimal place, so the answer does too: 3.6 × 4 = 14.4 kg.

  3. Tenths times tenths

Nina's herb patch is 0.3 m by 0.4 m. This square is one whole square meter, cut into 100 tiny squares. Shade 0.3 one way and 0.4 the other. The overlap is 12 tiny squares: 0.3 × 0.4 = 0.12!
