Grade 5 Math · Level 3, Decimals in the Real World

Fraction–Decimal Conversions

How the lesson starts: Fraction–Decimal Conversions

  1. Meet Ziggy the robot

Meet Mia and her robot pal Ziggy. Mia talks in fractions, like 3/4. But Ziggy only understands decimals! Today you'll be the translator, turning fractions into decimals and back again. Beep boop!

  2. Tenths and hundredths

Here's one whole, cut into 100 little squares. Mia shades 7 of the 10 columns: 7/10. Ziggy writes 0.7. Count the little squares: 70/100, or 0.70. Same amount! Tenths use one decimal place. Hundredths use two.

  3. Easy translations

    Some fractions are easy: make the bottom 10 or 100! 1/2 = 5/10 = 0.5. 1/4 = 25/100 = 0.25. 3/4 = 75/100 = 0.75. 1/5 = 2/10 = 0.2. 4/5 = 8/10 = 0.8. Ziggy loves these!
