Line Plots with Fractional Data
How the lesson starts: Line Plots with Fractional Data

The Backyard Bug Club
Hello, bug buddy! Welcome to the Backyard Bug Club. Priya and Finn found 8 wiggly caterpillars. Each one is 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 or 1 inch long. How can we show all those lengths at once? With a line plot!
Make a line plot
Each X is one caterpillar, placed above its length. One is 1/4 inch. Two are 1/2. Three are 3/4. Two are 1 inch. How many are longer than 1/2 inch? Count the X's to the right of 1/2: 3 + 2 = 5!
The caterpillar parade
Lined up head to tail, how long is the parade? Use each X's value! 1 × 1/4 = 1/4. 2 × 1/2 = 4/4. 3 × 3/4 = 9/4. 2 × 1 = 8/4. Add: 22/4 = 5 1/2 inches. Watch out: don't just count the X's!
