Build a Clear Paragraph

Choose a focused opening/topic sentence, order supporting details, use transitions, remove irrelevant material, and close clearly.

How the lesson starts: Build a Clear Paragraph

  1. Hazel's sandwich shop

Welcome to Hazel's Sandwich Shop! Hazel the hedgehog makes yummy sandwiches. She says a paragraph is like a sandwich. It has a top, fillings, and a bottom!

  2. The paragraph sandwich

The top bun is the opening sentence. It tells the topic. The fillings are details. They tell more about the topic. The bottom bun is the closing. It wraps it all up.

  3. A just-right opening

Hazel's topic is making a leaf boat. Leaves are part of nature? Too big! Poke a stick through the leaf? That is a filling. Making a leaf boat is quick and fun. Just right!
