Grade 3 English Language Arts · Level 2, Read Literature Closely and Write Narratives

Compare Point of View in Literature

Distinguish the student’s own point of view from that of the narrator or characters and recognize differing character perspectives.

How the lesson starts: Compare Point of View in Literature

  1. Same snow, two views

Snow fell on Bumble Hill! Pia the penguin and Hugo the hamster live there. They see the very same snow. But they feel totally different about it. How someone sees things is their point of view.

  2. Who is talking?

Quotation marks hold a character's own words. The words after them tell who said it. Hooray, a snow day, cheered Pia. Cheered Pia means Pia said it. So those words show Pia's point of view. Too cold, mumbled Hugo. That shows Hugo's.

  3. Let's find who thinks it

Read. I love to swim in the lake, said Tika. The water is too cold for me, said Dale. Who thinks the lake is too cold? Find the words about cold. Then look right after them. Said Dale. So Dale thinks it's too cold!
