Grade 3 English Language Arts · Level 2, Read Literature Closely and Write Narratives

Use Illustrations as Story Evidence

Explain how specific illustrations add information, mood, setting, or character emphasis beyond or alongside the words.

How the lesson starts: Use Illustrations as Story Evidence

  1. Ollie draws the clues

Meet Ollie, an octopus who draws pictures for storybooks. Eight arms, eight crayons! Ollie's pictures are not just pretty. They show things the words never say. Let's read pictures like detectives.

  2. Words alone

Here are the words. Keiko opened the door. She pulled up her hood and stepped outside. What is the weather like? Hmm. The words do not say!

  3. Let's add the picture

Now look at Ollie's picture. A rain cloud, an umbrella, and a happy frog. The picture adds something new. It is raining! The words never said that. That's what the picture adds.
