Trace Reasons and Evidence

Identify an author’s points and determine which reasons and evidence support each point.

How the lesson starts: Trace Reasons and Evidence

  1. Priya's big idea

Priya the parrot wants a dog park in the town of Featherby. She brings her argument to Judge Tamsin, a wise old tortoise. Tamsin asks: what is the evidence for each reason?

  2. An argument is a tower

The claim is what the author wants you to believe. Reasons are the big whys under it. Evidence is the facts and numbers that prove each reason. Every reason needs its own evidence.

  3. Let's match them

Reason: dogs need room to run. Evidence: most homes have no fenced yard. Reason: sidewalks would be cleaner. Evidence: parks with dog areas report fewer messes. Reason: neighbors would meet. Evidence: forty neighbors met at a test event. Match the fact that proves that exact reason.
